From Kirkus Reviews Six episodes feature familiar childhood experiences with three enterprising siblings and their parents, who manage to transform conflict into good cheer despite the circumstances. Bigun's thrill at getting his first bike sours when he can't balance, and he's furious when he catches younger sister Middlun riding it; still, she offers a useful tipand then cleverly ensures that he doesn't take his revenge. When a beach weekend seems doomed by fog, cold, and delays, resourcefulness and patience will result in an exhilarating time. Despite the abundant detail and dialogue, the characters remain flat, while some incidentsthe delays encountered en route to the beach, or Middlun winning a poster competitionare predictable. Published in 1990 in Britain, this edition is Americanized but still doesn't explain the mysterious acronym NCCAFA.'' Soft pencil illustrations capture the children absorbed in work and play. Adequate, but not essential. (Fiction. 58) Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. Product Description Six short stories chronicle the adventures and escapades of three mischievous childrenBigun, Middlun, and Littlunin the city, living above their father's busy burger restaurant. From School Library Journal Grade 24 A British story filled with humor and warmth that features a family living above a burger shop where the father works. The oldest of the three : children, Bigun is a sevenyearold who is big for his age. Middlun, his sixyearold sister, is smart, resourceful, and mischievous. Her creativity and artistic talent add imaginative scenarios to this early chapter book. Readers who like Pollyanna and other oldfashioned stories are sure to like this one. Although not as good as Cameron's Julian'' series, it is charming and, despite its sweetness, does include some realistic elements such as sibling rivalries and fears. Harrison's light pencil drawings look a little like unfinished sketches. Some are throughly shadowed by lines with little subtlety or graduation. They do show good movement, action, and character, however. Pleasing fare, but not a necessity. Susannah Price, Boise Public Library, IDCopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
