Zwei Hauptthemen stehen im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit: einerseits die natrliche Funktion der Angst (Lebenserhaltung und Fortpflanzung) und andererseits die kulturellen ngste, die durch den Menschen und seine Institutionen geschaffen werden (u.a. Religion, Politik, Recht). Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden individuelle und kollektive Angstauslser sowie Taktiken zur Angstbewltigung aufgezeigt. Das zweite Kapitel widmet sich der mndlichen und schriftlichen berlieferung der Angsterfahrungen ber die Generationen hinweg (Kollektivgedchtnis). Im dritten Teil steht die whrend der Neuzeit und insbesondere durch die Juristen und Mediziner injizierte Neubewertung der Angst als eine Krankheit im Mittelpunkt. Das letzte Kapitel beschftigt sich mit der Frage, inwiefern sich das heutige Angstverstndnis von demjenigen der Neuzeit unterscheidet oder auch nicht.
