Die gesellschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und lebensweltlichen Umwlzungen, die mit dem Eintritt in das Industriezeitalter einhergingen, bewirkten auch eine neue Wahrnehmung der eigenen Person. Die Auflsung tradierter Gesellschaftsstrukturen, Rollenzuweisungen und der damit verbundene Verlust uerer Kategorisierungsmglichkeiten von Identitt, bewirkte eine Relevanzverschiebung zugunsten innerer, persnlichkeitsstiftender Merkmale. Identitt konnte nicht mehr ber uere Kategorisierungen hergestellt, sondern musste aus dem Inneren heraus entwickelt werden. Die, durch die vernderten uerlichen Umstnde bedingte, Haltlosigkeit bildet die Grundlage fr die Identittskrisen, wie sie in der Literatur der frhen Moderne dargestellt werden. Kennzeichnend fr die literarische Moderne ist somit die Abnahme der Relevanz objektiver Realitt zugunsten der subjektiven Realitt, deren Ausdruck unter anderem eine Psychologisierung von Wirklichkeitserfahrungen, die Wiedergabe subjektiver Wahrnehmungs und Bewusstseinsvorgnge und damit auch ein Zurcktreten vermittelnder Erzhlinstanzen sind. Innerhalb dieser Arbeit wird dargestellt, wie Figuren mit ngsten umgehen, die sowohl aus dieser Identittskrise resultieren als auch dieselbe bedingen, sowie ob und auf welche Weise die Figuren in der Lage sind, diese ngste wahrzunehmen. Des Weiteren wird untersucht, ob sich bestimmte Vorraussetzungen feststellen lassen, unter denen die Figuren in der Lage sind, ihre ngste zu berwinden und welche Folgen das Scheitern von Angstbewltigung fr die Figuren hat.
