La Diabetes Mellitus es una enfermedad multifactorial que se manifiesta por una conjuncin de factores ambientales y genticos, donde varios genes contribuyen a su manifestacin. La Diabetes Mellitus tipo 1 (DMT1) es una enfermedad autoimmune que se manifiesta por una cascada de eventos inmunolgicos que culmina en la autodestruccin de las clulas del pncreas en individuos genticamente susceptibles. Uno de los 6 genes asociados a este tipo de diabetes es el PTPN22 (Protein tirosin fosfatasa noreceptora 22), que codifica para una protena de membrana cuyo rol es prevenir la activacin espontnea de las clulas T y de sus sustratos. La poblacin uruguaya posee caractersticas nicas debido a su origen trihbrido constituido por una mezcla de sangre caucsica, indgena y africana. Resulta por lo tanto interesante estudiar la constitucin gentica del gen PTPN22 en dicha poblacin, con el objetivo de buscar nuevos polimorfismos y su posible asociacin con la DMT1.
