Distinguished as poet, essayist, educator, critic and Dissenter, Mrs. Barbauld is an excellent representative of the cultural climate of late eighteenth century England. Well known and respected for her spirited powers of conversation and argument, she numbered among her acquaintances Mary Wollstonecraft, Joseph Priestley, Maria Edgeworth, William Wordsworth, Amelia Opie and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. As a teacher she inspired and surprised by combining the moral discipline of a Dissenting believer with a devotion to literature and theatre. At the age of thirty she became famous through the publication of a book of poems. Past the age of sixty she edited, with critical introductory essays, a 50volume set of The British Novelists. She was one of the first to assess the new genre, the English novel. This new biography looks at her life and sets her in her cultural context. The book is particularly rich in original material: extracts from diaries, letters and documents which the author's painstaking reasearch has located in archives throughout England.
