Neben regulr bezahlten Arbeitskrften ist ein bedeutender Anteil an Beschftigten in NonprofitOrganisationen ehrenamtlich ttig und stellt daher ein wichtiges gesamtgesellschaftliches Phnomen dar. Das freiwillige Engagement leistet nachweislich einen erheblichen Beitrag zum gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt. Viele NPOs sind darum bemht, die zu erfllenden Qualittserwartungen zu realisieren und dabei die Kosten niedrig zu halten. Ein erfolgreiches Personalmanagement spielt somit eine sehr wichtige Rolle. Personalmanagement besteht grundstzlich aus den Aufgaben die Verfgbarkeit von Personal zu sichern und fr die Arbeitsleistung der Beschftigten einer Organisation auf einem erwnschten Qualittsniveau zu angemessenen Kosten zu sorgen. In einer NonprofitOrganisation, die ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter beschftigt und meist auf deren Beitrag zur Organisation angewiesen ist, bestehen groe Herausforderungen darin, die Arbeitsleistung zu optimieren und die Interessen der Beschftigten an die Ziele der Organisation anzugleichen. Dazu trgt bei, dass viele der herkmmlichen finanziellen Instrumente der Leistungssteuerung, wie Kontroll oder Anreizsysteme aufgrund der fehlenden Geldleistung bei Ehrenamtlichen nicht im klassischen Sinne angewendet werden knnen.
