In das Werk ber die rmischen Altertmer sind vielfach lateinische Quellen aus zwei Jahrtausenden eingegangen, von antiken Klassikern ber Kompendien der humanistischen Gelehrsamkeit bis zu Auszgen aus Goethe und Kant: Das verbreitete MoritzBild vom spontanvoraussetzungslosen Einzelgnger erhlt durch diesen Befund eine wichtige Ergnzung.Als Teil eines ursprnglich grer angelegten Werkkomplexes handelt Anthusa von den Festen und Riten der rmischen Religion. In ihrer Interpretation hat Moritz den Weg von einer inhaltsfixierten, durch christliche Polemik geprgten Sichtweise zu einer strker 'strukturalistischen' Deutung gebahnt. Nach den Kategorien der von ihm entwickelten sthetik erschliet er die uerungen antiker Religiositt als Entsprechungen des Kunstschnen und damit auf eine Weise, die dem ausgeprgten Formalismus dieser Religion entspricht.
