The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is one of the oldest art museums in the United States and was the first in the capital. This book is published to coincide with an exhibition celebrating the seventyfifth anniversary of William A. Clark's bequest of more than 800 objects from his private collection. Spanning many centuries of creativity, from Ancient Greece to French Impressionism, much of this collection has never before been published and will be exhibited at the Corcoran between November 2001 and March 2003. Having earned his fortune in the copper industry, William Clark amassed his huge art collection in retirement.
