El trabajo analiza el conjunto de estrategias y de recursos de vida implementadas por un grupo de 110 familias de los sectores medios residentes en la ciudad de Mxico, a partir del impacto que tuvo en la economa mexicana la instrumentacin de una serie de programas y de polticas econmicas de corte neoliberal, as como tambin los efectos dejados por la crisis econmica de 1994. Este es un sector de la poblacin poco analizado en el seno de la antropologa mexicana, ya que el inters de sta tradicionalmente se ha enfocado al estudio de los sectores pobres y marginados (indgenas, campesinos y obreros. Sin embargo, aqu el autor hace un registro de la vida cotidiana de estas familias, que pasaron de la prosperidad laboral a la vulnerabilidad y exclusin econmica y social en un periodo muy corto de tiempo como resultado del impacto de la reestructuracin econmica y la crisis. Con las tcnicas tradicionales de la antropologa (trabajo de campo, historias de vida y entrevistas a profundidad), el autor presenta el nuevo rostro de familias antes privilegiadas y hoy colocadas en situacin de pobreza y exclusin.
