Tradicionalmente la medicina ha justificado la legitimidad de la sedacin terminal a travs del principio del doble efecto. Sin embargo, hoy la apelacin a tal principio resulta ambigua, puesto que se utiliza, tanto para justificar la muerte por compasin (eutanasia), como para aliviar el dolor a travs de la sedacin. Una consecuencia inmediata en los profesionales de la salud, ha sido la revisin de la finalidad de su perfil vocacional y, por consiguiente, de las responsabilidades ticas que conlleva tal praxis. La identidad de la vocacin mdica requiere ser dilucidada a partir de una idea de hombre, que asumiendo la condicin de enfermabilidad y de muerte, permita identificar el origen y fundamento ontolgico de la praxis mdica. Y, a partir de esta antropologa, reconocer los alcances ticos que conlleva tal praxis. En esta perspectiva desde la biotica actual se asume la antropologa, la epistemologa y el razonamiento prctico de Pedro Lan Entralgo para tratar el tema de la sedacin terminal como buena praxis clnica.
