Cette version est une pice importante pour les tudes origniennes, non seulement parce qu'elle contient 70 citations de l'Alexandrin d'un grand intrt thologique dont 34 non transmises par ailleurs , mais aussi parce qu'elle apporte un tmoignage sur les controverses suscites par l'enseignement d'Origne autour des annes 300, soit peu avant le dclenchement de la crise arienne. Elle rvle en outre un crivain de talent, Pamphile, aussi habile mettre en vidence la mthode et la personnalit d'Origne qu' fustiger ses adversaires. La version de cette ' Apologie ', qui reoit ici sa premire dition scientifique et sa premire traduction dans une langue moderne, est encadre par deux textes de Rufin, une courte prface et un curieux opuscule ' Sur la falsification des livres d'Origne ' qui est en fait un vritable trait sur l'histoire des faux littraires dans la littrature chrtienne des quatre premiers sicles.
