El concepto de gen es complejo, fundamental e involucrado en el conocimiento de gran parte de la Biologa; su aprendizaje requiere conocer su estructura, tipos, mecanismos de expresin, funciones y procesos biolgicos en los cuales est implicado, adems de su epistemologa e historia.Su conocimiento como informacin biolgica, con diversas maneras de expresin, est relacionado con distintas funciones de sistemas vivientes y supone entender que su significado no es nico en todos los campos de la Biologa, ni ha sido el mismo a lo largo de la historia. Se realizaron estudios sobre sus significados en materiales educativos y entre profesores. Adems de comprender los hechos desde la perspectiva de los actores, a partir de una investigacin accin participativa. Se dise una propuesta de enseanza potencialmente significativa considerando los principios facilitadores de Moreira(2005).
