In some instances, the book offers a record of buildings under threat of or actually scheduled for demolition at the time of the book's publication. Others have been designated as historic landmarks and have been marked for preservation or have been restored to some former state. A few were built as early as the late 18th century, when white settlers had only just come to Middle Tennessee; a few date from the early years of the 20th century; the rest show the changing architectural styles of the 19th centural and reveal how the prevailing tastes of the time were adapted by Tennessee builders to the needs, climate, terrain, and available building materials of the region.
