Der Band behandelt Aspekte der Denkmalpflege im stlichen Mitteleuropa, die aus der besonderen historischen und gesellschaftspolitischen Situation im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert resultieren. In den multiethnisch geprgten Regionen, die bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg von den drei Gromchten Ruland, sterreich und Preuen dominiert wurden, gewannen national konnotierte Baudenkmler eine eminente Bedeutung im Streben nach staatlicher Unabhngigkeit. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entstand in Polen eine eigene Schule des rekonstruierenden Wiederaufbaus; gleichzeitig waren in allen Lndern des Ostblocks Zeugnisse der Feudalkultur von Zerstrung bedroht. Der politische Umbruch des Jahres 1989 fhrte zu einer Wiederentdeckung der Geschichte, die jedoch, wie die Schlodebatten in Bratislava (Preburg) und Berlin zeigen, nicht zwingend einhergeht mit einem Bewutsein fr die historische Authentizitt des Baudenkmals.
