Seine Analyse des Menschen enthlt eine Theorie zu den menschlichen Antrieben. Diese Theorie wird im Folgenden im Zusammenhang mit Gehlens in der Einfhrung von 'Der Mensch' gegebenen theoretischen und methodologischen Grundannahmen erlutert. Im ersten Teil sollen die wesentlichen Grundannahmen Gehlens, die 'Mngelwesenthese', die 'anthropobiologische' Fragestellung und die Bekenntnisse zur empirischen Methode dargestellt werden. Es wird gezeigt, dass Gehlen eine an Herders 'Mngelwesenthese' orientierte, ganzheitliche Betrachtungsperspektive auf den Menschen entwickelt hat, die diesen primr als handelndes Wesen versteht. Dem folgt im zweiten Teil Gehlens Analyse der menschlichen Antriebe. Der menschliche Trieb wird von Gehlen in Abgrenzung zum tierischen Instinkt und zur Psychologie der Grundtriebe definiert. Hierbei wird die Rolle der Handlung fr den Aufbau des menschlichen Trieblebens deutlich und in den Zusammenhang mit Gehlens Vorstellung von der Seele gebracht. Anschlieend wird dargestellt, wie die typisch menschlichen Phnomene 'Charakter', 'Dauerinteresse' und 'Entscheidungsproblem' von Gehlen anhand seiner entwickelten Theorie der Antriebe erklrt werden knnen. Schlielich wird auf Gehlens Begriff des Willens eingegangen. Gehlens gesamte Analyse der menschlichen Antriebe wird dabei immer im Licht seiner grundlegenden Annahmen interpretiert.
