La masonera en Espaa es una historia salpicada por la polmica y deteriorada por el tratamiento partidista que le han dado sus enemigos y apologistas. En este estudio se intenta ubicar a la masonera en el lugar que le corresponde en la historia de los espaoles en el primer tercio del siglo XX, es decir, en el de una sociedad que sinti la doble necesidad de luchar por la ciudadana poltica y la justicia social, y de participar en las mejoras educativas y culturales. Se buscaba, construir una sociedad cuyo bien comn fuese un principio poltico. As es como los masones se convierten en arquitectos de una idea, que se quiso dentro de la Repblica y en contra de la monarqua alfonsina. A lo largo de este periodo, con sus crisis y rupturas, la sociedad de los masones haba intentado ampliar su espacio natural, atraer tanto a republicanos como a socialistas, reelaborando toda su cultura republicana y convirtindose en refugio de opositores a la dictadura de Primo de Rivera. Cuando llego la Repblica en 1931, estos arquitectos pasaron a servirla. La idea de la Repblica se materializ y la masonera pudo vivir y padecer las carencias y los fracasos de aquel Estado. Como es sabido, su identificacin, tanto moral como poltica, acabo por costarle un alto precio, puesto que fueron los masones las primeras victimas de la represin de los sublevados en julio de 1936.
