Die Vorstellung, dass 'fides' der Massstab politischer Ethik zu sein habe, wird von vielen romischen Autoren transportiert. Der Historiker Livius bezeichnet daher die List als die am "wenigsten romische Kunst", 'ars minime Romana'. Doch die Kultur der Romer, die sich an so vielen Werten zu orientieren scheint, hat moglicherweise gerade deswegen einen gesteigerten Bedarf an listigen Handlungsoptionen entwickelt. Der List eignet das Potenzial, Regeln zu unterlaufen, ohne sie preiszugeben, und genau dadurch ist sie fur die Romer so wertvoll. Besonders die jungen Manner haben in Rom die Lizenz listig zu handeln und konnen mit dieser Lizenz den romischen Staat aus mancher politischen Verlegenheit befreien. In der vorliegenden Studie wird das Motiv der List vor allem in der augusteischen Literatur untersucht: der Geschichtsschreibung, der Liebeselegie und dem Epos. 'Virtus' und 'dolus': der alte Dualismus erscheint so in immer neuen Varianten und wird zum Teil in uberraschender Weise aktualisiert: im Krieg, in der Liebe und schliesslich sogar im Rahmen eines kosmischen Weltverstandnisses.
