Jahrhundert, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In einer Zeit von enormen gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Umschwngen, Fortschritt in Wissenschaft und Medizin, Frauenbewegung und politischen Umstrzen steht der Mensch an der Schwelle zur Moderne und schwankt zwischen Euphorie und Zukunftsangst, Tatendrang und Resignation das Januskpfige seiner Epoche, des Fin de Sicle, beschreibt Hugo von Hofmannsthal 1893 in seinem Essay Gabriele d'Annunzio. Die Epoche, schon zeitlich schwer einzugrenzen, vereint viele verschiedene Stilrichtungen und Motive, die wenn nicht sogar kontrr so doch zumindest ineinander berlaufen und schwer voneinander abgrenzbar sind. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es sein, anhand der sehr unterschiedlichen Novellen Pippo Spano von Heinrich Mann und Traumnovelle von Arthur Schnitzler, zwei fr die Jahrhundertwende typische Motive die Dcadence und die Geschlechterproblematik aufzuzeigen und nher zu erlutern, sowie Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in der Bearbeitung der Thematik herauszuarbeiten und in den sozialhistorischen Kontext einzuordnen. Zunchst sollen die wichtigsten literaturhistorischen, gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Hintergrnde dargestellt werden, im Folgenden erfolgt eine Vorstellung der zu untersuchenden Novellen um dann auf dieser Grundlage die Erzhlungen dahingehend zu untersuchen, inwieweit sie Merkmale der Dcadence aufweisen und wie sie die Geschlechterproblematik des Zeitalters aufgreifen und bearbeiten.
