Errtert wird auf begriffsgeschichtlicher Basis das Verhltnis des Philosophen Arthur Schopenhauer (17881860) zu seinem selbsternannten "Schler" Philipp Mainlnder (18411876), der mit Julius Bahnsen und ungleich bekannter Eduard von Hartmann das Dreigestirn der "SchopenhauerSchule" bildet. Inwiefern eine Berechtigung auf Seiten Mainlnders besteht, sich als "Schler" Schopenhauers zu betiteln, und inwiefern weitergefasst eine reelle Grundlage auszumachen ist, Mainlnder zur SchopenhauerSchule zu rechnen, untersucht die Arbeit am fr beide Philosophien zentralen Begriff des "Charakters": Fr diesen Begriff wird daher einerseits erstmals seine Zentralstellung in der Philosophie Schopenhauers erwiesen. Andererseits wird anhand von Mainlnders Selbstverstndnis als eines Teilhabers an der "philosophia perennis" und anhand seiner Rezeption hauptschlich Schopenhauer'schen Gedankengutes, das im Charakterbegriff verdichtet bereitliegt, gezeigt, dass die Philosophie Philipp Mainlnders mit gutem Recht eine "Schlerschaft" zum berhmten Pessimisten bedeutet.
