Ce volume rassemble des pomes de Paul Eluard (18951952) publis pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le plus souvent dans la clandestinit sous des pseudonymes tels que Jean du Haut ou Maurice Hervent, dans divers recueils, revues et brochures (dont LHonneur des potes, Minuit, juillet 1943 et Europe, Minuit, mai 1944). Ainsi le recueil Posie et vrit 1942, publi en mai 1942 aux ditions de la Main la Plume, et dans lequel figurent La Dernire Nuit et quelques autres pomes dont le sens ne peut gure laisser de doutes sur le but poursuivi: retrouver, pour nuire loccupant, la libert dexpression.Lun de ces quelques autres pomes est Libert.Et partout en France, crit Paul Eluard dans la bibliographie du recueil, des voix se rpondent, qui chantent pour couvrir le lourd murmure de la bte, pour que les vivants triomphent, pour que la honte disparaisse.Ces pomes dEluard furent recueillis en un volume publi aux ditions de Minuit en 1945, avec trois autres pomes inspirs entre 1936 et 1938 par la guerre dEspagne.
