In dieser Arbeit wird sich auf eine Spurensuche nach der Entstehung einer neuen Kategorie, nmlich Leerverben als paralleler Kopulastrang, begeben. Der bergang von einem Inhaltselement (Vollverb) zu einem Funktionselement (Leerverb) wird hufig als ein sprachliches Paradoxon betrachtet. Am Beispiel von Leerverben wird verdeutlicht, dass der Verlust des semantischen Gehalts durch einen Gewinn an Funktionalitt mehr als ausgeglichen wird. Somit muss bei Betrachtung der Funktionalitt von Funktionselementen im Allgemeinen und von Leerverben im Besonderen der Eindruck eines Paradoxons revidiert werden. Die Ergebnisse der Spurensuche illustrieren darber hinaus ein weitaus greres sprachliches Phnomen, nmlich, dass es im Bereich der Grammatik, im Gegensatz zur Lexik, im doppelten Sinn nicht zu etwas Neuem kommt. Weder wird aus semantischer Sicht eine vllig neue Bedeutung verwendet noch eine neue Form erschaffen, sondern es wird einer in der Sprache bereits bestehenden Form ein neuer Funktionsbereich zugewiesen.
