Diese Studie gilt der kulturellen und der poetischen Konstruktion autobiographischer Texte, die zwischen 1933 und 1945 von deutschsprachigen Exilautoren verfasst wurden. Es geht in dieser Untersuchung um die Art und Weise, wie die Exilautoren die verlorene Welt von Gestern knstlerisch rekonstruiert beziehungsweise konstruiert haben, wobei die Frage nach der Modernitt der literarischen Autobiographien im Zentrum steht: ob und inwieweit bersetzten die Exilautoren die kulturellen Aporien der Zeit in eine erkenntniskritische Poetik der Moderne. Die detaillierten Analysen dreier reprsentativer Beispiele der Autobiographien von Stefan Zweig, Heinrich Mann und Alfred Dblin zeigen, wie die drei Autoren heterogene poetische Positionen vertraten, die ihre individuellen Reaktionen auf den Sinnverlust im Exil widerspiegeln, der zugleich im Kontext des Totalittsverlusts und der Totalittssehnsucht der Moderne zu deuten ist.
