Whrend der Jahrzehnte vor und nach 1800 wurde der Bhnenautor Kotzebue auf den europischen Theatern weit hufiger aufgefhrt als Goethe und Schiller zusammen. Von St. Petersburg bis nach New York, in den Residenzstdten wie mittels Wanderbhnen auch auf Drfern. Der die Theatergesetze genial Beherrschende wurde seitens des preuischen Knigspaares, Napoleons, der russischen Zaren, des Kaisers in Wien und sogar von der Knigin von Neapel in Privataudienzen empfangen. Der studierte Jurist stieg zum Prsidenten des Revaler Gouvernementmagistrates auf, wurde geadelt, russischer Staatsrat und spter russischer Generalkonsul in Knigsberg. Seine Ermordung durch einen fanatischen Theologiestudenten 1819 fhrte zu den sogenannten Karlsbader Beschlssen und damit zur jahrzehntelangen rigorosen Verschrfung der politischen Situation in deutschen Landen. Unter seinen ehedem Hunderten von Bhnenstcken sind auch heute noch einige kstliche Lustspiele auf dem Spielplan der Theater prsent. In ihrer handwerklichen Meisterschaft und gleichzeitig facilen Handhabung knnten sie vor allem die Film und Fernsehindustrie animieren und bereichern.
