Of the forty mammal species known to have vanished in the world in the last 200 years, almost half have been Australian. Our continent has the worst record of mammal extinctions, with over 65 mammal species having vanished in the last 50 000 years. It began with the great wave of megafauna extinctions in the last iceage, and continues today, with many mammal species vulnerable to extinction. The question of why mammals became extinct, and why so many became extinct in Australia has been debated by experts for over a century and a half and we are no closer to agreement on the causes. This book introduces readers to the great mammal extinction debate. Chris Johnson takes us on a detectivelike tour of these extinctions, uncovering how, why and when they occurred.

I really enjoyed 'Australia's Mammal Extinctions'. It covers 50,000 years of history, which makes you realize how much we’ve lost in terms of species. The author does a great job of weaving storytelling with facts, and it kept me engaged throughout. Definitely a must-read for anyone interested in conservation!

Insightful but heavy on facts
As a wildlife biologist, I appreciated the thoroughness of this book. It really dives deep into the history of Australia's mammal extinctions. However, it felt a little too academic for casual readers. It could use a bit more narrative flair to keep things lively!

Interesting but a bit dry at times
This book has some great information about Australia’s mammal extinctions, but I found some chapters a bit tedious. The 50,000-year timeline is extensive, and while it’s informative, I wished for a more engaging style. Still worth a read if you’re into wildlife history.

Not what I expected
Honestly, I anticipated a more accessible read. 'Australia's Mammal Extinctions' is packed with data but at times felt overwhelming. It’s definitely comprehensive, but I struggled with some of the jargon. Might be great for specialists, but it was a bit much for me.

Great educational resource
I bought this book for my son who’s studying ecology, and he loves it! The details on how Australia’s mammals have changed over 50,000 years are fascinating. The writing is clear, which helps him understand complex concepts. Great addition to his school projects!
