Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, sind Wissensreprsentationen ntig. Dafr hat sich in der Informatik in den letzten Jahren der Begriff Ontologie eingebrgert. Der Begriff der Ontologie hat eine lange Tradition in der Philosophie und den Sprachwissenschaften. Erst in den 90er Jahren wurde der Begriff in die Informatik von Gruber eingefhrt. Er definierte eine Ontologie als explicit specification of a conceptualization". Eine aktuelle Definition, die darauf aufgebaut ist, ist die von Studer: "Eine Ontologie ist eine explizite, formale Spezifikation der Konzeptualisierung eines abgegrenzten Diskursbereichs zu einem definierten Zweck, auf die sich eine Gruppe von Akteuren geeinigt hat." Anders als bei einem konzeptionellen Datenbankschema enthalten Ontologien Informationen ber die Bedeutung der gespeicherten Daten sowie Regeln ber deren Zusammenhang. Eine Ontologie ist ein formales Wissensmodell, das im Wissensmanagement, in Experten und Multiagentensystemen, bei der Informationsintegration und vor allem im Semantic Web eingesetzt wird. Gerade in diesen Bereichen haben die Ontologien einen groen Aufschwung erlangt, wie in Abb. 1.1 ersichtlich ist. Besonders seit dem Aufkommen des Semantic Webs werden sie immer mehr zur Grundlange fr Austausch und Zusammenfhren von Informationen (siehe Abb. 1.1).
