Pieds et chaussures, en effet, ne constituent pas, chez Flaubert, de simples thmes rcurrents mais sont de vritables organes moteurs qui structurent le rcit. On se souvient, par exemple, du piedbot d'Hippolyte, le garon d'curie de Madame Bovary : ce pied, dans sa difformit, parat un miroir de l'me chancelante de l'hrone et incarne ses carts de conduite ; la claudication laquelle le condamne la pitre chirurgie de Charles, lorsqu'il s'improvise orthopdiste, ne fait qu'encourager les dportements d'Emma. Dans son oeuvre, le fils de l'minent mdecinchef de l'Hteldieu de Rouen, orthopdiste spcialis dans la rduction des luxations, tient la mdecine en chec.
