Ihre Sprache wird allgemein Bable genannt, stt im spanischen aber auf die Entsprechung Asturiano. Geographisch betrachtet, ist das Frstentum Asturien (Autonome Region) 10 565 km gro und liegt zwischen Kantabrien und Galicien (auch Autonome Regionen) in Spanien. Die Hauptstadt heit Oviedo. Mit einer Gesamtzahl von etwa 1,1 Millionen Einwohnern handelt es sich hierbei um eine der am dichtesten besiedelten Provinzen Spaniens, die aus 78 Gemeinden besteht, die sich in vier Dialektgruppen (Zonen) unterteilen lassen. Wahrscheinlich den Grundstein fr jedwede linguistische Aktivitten hat der Gijoner Schriftsteller Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (17441811) gelegt, als er sich aktiv fr die "Verbesserung der konomischen und kulturellen Situation und Erforschung der asturianischen Sprache" einsetzte. [...] Weil er von Klein auf Asturianisch sprach und sich fr die Sprache interessierte, fhlte er sich sowohl gefhlsmig mit ihr verbunden, als da auch unter ihm asturianische Dichtungen entstanden. Im Jahre 1946 wurde das Instituto de Estudios Asturianos (IDEA) gegrndet. Es nahm 1947 seine Ttigkeit auf und verffentlicht seitdem Bcher, veranstaltet Konferenzen und lt die Zeitschrift Boletn del Instituto de Estudios Asturianos (BIDEA) erscheinen. In allen dreien wird die asturianische Sprache bercksichtigt. 23 Jahre spter, das heit am 28. Juli 1969, schlossen sich verschiedene Amigos del Bable zusammen und grndeten eine Vereinigung, der sie eben diesen Namen gaben.
