Cultural writing. Middle East Studies. Biography and Memoir. A wise and often gently funny memoir by one of the worlds authorities on Arabic literature, this book offers an intimate view of Jewish life in Baghdad in the 1930s and 40s. It describes vividly the young writers intellectual and emotional growth and maps the now-vanished world of Baghdads book stalls and literary cafes, its Arabic-speaking Jewish bank clerks, tuxedoed Iraqi-Jewish weddings, outdoor movies at the Cinema Diana, and bonfires by the Tigris. As the pieces of Somekhs unsentimental and sharply drawn memoir accumulate, they also mount in meaning It is hard to overstate the beauty, originality, lucidity, gentleness, wisdom, and importance of Baghdad, Yesterday--Maariv.

I really wanted to love this book, but it fell flat for me. The arguments were not well-supported and I was expecting better depth. Also, the formatting was a bit off which made it hard to engage with. I’m really bummed about this one.

Interesting but Lacked Depth in Parts
This book covers some intriguing aspects of Arab-Jewish history, but I found certain sections a bit surface-level. While I appreciate the attempt to blend narratives, some areas felt rushed. Still, it’s a solid contribution to understanding cultural dynamics.

A Fascinating Read on Arab-Jewish Identity
I picked up 'Yesterday: The Making of an Arab Jew' out of curiosity about cultural histories. It’s beautifully written and really sheds light on a complex identity. The author’s insights into the Arab-Jewish experience are thought-provoking. Definitely worth the read!
