An insightful and candid portrait of the artist Balthus. Presented in the form of ABC questions, Balthus: In His Own Words reveals his personal universe. B for beauty, H for Homer, M for Mozart, S for SOS, Balthus takes us through his intimate thoughts and views on everything from Paris to Chinese calligraphy. Balthus (19082001) learned how to paint at the Louvre museum and in Italy. A figurative artist, he gained a reputation for his incisive style and incredible precision. Balthus sometimes spent years on one painting, obsessively observing and recreating on canvas. Later, he focused on the nude, particularly on adolescent girls, which fell halfway between innocence and perversion. As the last book written in his own words before his death, it has even more significance. The artistss voice shines through, offering an authentic and personal perspective.

I recently picked up 'Balthus: In His Own Words' and it’s such a deep dive into the mind of the artist. The insights he shares are fascinating and really bring his paintings to life. If you're into art history or just love his work, this is a great addition to any collection!

Not what I expected
I was really excited to read 'Balthus: In His Own Words' but was disappointed. The book arrived with some pages creased, and I found the content not as engaging as I hoped. I wanted more about his life rather than just his philosophy on art.

Intriguing but somewhat dense
I enjoyed 'Balthus: In His Own Words' for the most part, but I found some sections to be a bit heavy. The context is rich, but it took me some time to get through it. Still, I appreciate the perspective it gives on his artistic process. Worth a read if you're patient!
