From School Library JournalPreSchoolGrade 2When Bartholomew's mother responds to his screams in the middle of the night, he recounts a dream in which a huge snake wraps itself around her, a tidal wave sweeps her into the ocean, and cannibals stuff her into their cooking pot. In each instance, Bartholomew bravely rescues his mother just in timeuntil she disappears again, and he can't find her. Wummer's oilcrayon illustrations depict a bedroom wrapped in deep blue light. When the boy is most upset by his nightmare, the bedroom furniture appears askew. The three dream sequences, which alternate with the domestic scenes, are each represented in a predominant color befitting the environment, with vegetation forming a natural frame. The scary scenes are alleviated by touches of humor, e.g., the contrite snake looks very much like the stuffed one wrapped around Bartholomew's bed post. All ends well as the boy receives a final comforting hug and settles into sleep. While the dialogue is sometimes forced and unchildlike, there are not many stories that deal with a youngster's fear of a parent disappearing, and this one could provide a reassuring bedtime read.Marianne Saccardi, Norwalk CommunityTechnical College, CTCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.Product DescriptionWhen a young boy describes to his mother how he rescued her when she wandered off in his dreams, she promises to stay close by for the rest of the night
