A Christcentered approach to dealing with trauma on both a personal and a communal levelTraumas abound. Posttraumatic stress disorder, emotional and sexual abuse, unbearable anxiety and fear, and a host of other traumas afflict people everywhere. In this book Deborah van Deusen Hunsinger weaves together threads from the fields of psychology and pastoral theology as she explores the impact of trauma on peoples lives and offers practical strategies and restorative practices for dealing with it.Not only a teacher of pastoral theology but also an experienced pastoral counselor herself, Hunsinger draws on the resources of depth psychology, including object relations theory, trauma theory, family systems theory, nonviolent communication, and restorative circles. She then places her findings in a Christian theological context, emphasizing Gods work in and through Jesus passion, death, and resurrection, to present a cohesive, faithbased vision for healing.

Honestly, I found the book to be a bit difficult to get through. The content is important, but the writing style didn’t connect with me very well. I was hoping for more actionable guidance for pastoral care.

Could use more practical examples
I found the theories in 'Bearing the Unbearable' interesting, but I expected more real-life applications. Some chapters felt a bit abstract for my taste. Still, it gave me food for thought for my pastoral approach.

Thought-provoking insights for my ministry
I picked up 'Bearing the Unbearable' for our church's pastoral care group. The perspectives on trauma and gospel integration are so vital for our community. It’s been a great resource for discussions and understanding how to better serve those in need.

Decent but not engaging enough
'Bearing the Unbearable' has some valuable information, but I struggled to stay engaged. It has its moments of brilliance, but I wish it flowed better. Maybe it just wasn't the right fit for me.

Challenging but rewarding read
This book tackles heavy topics with care, which I appreciated. The lessons on pastoral care in the face of trauma were illuminating. A bit dense at times, but worth the effort for anyone involved in ministry.
