In dem Buch 'Seine Filme seine Werke' von Reinhold Rauh wird sogar davon gesprochen, dass Manhattan der 'eigentliche Hauptdarsteller des Films' sei. Der Vorspann des Filmes zeigt verschiedene schwarzwei Panoramen von Manhattan und seinen Bewohnern: die 5th Avenue, das Plaza Hotel, den Central Park, weniger schne Huserfronten, dunkle Hinterhfe, Cafs, Restaurants, andere bekannte und unbekannte Orte, Industrie, Baustellen und verschiedene Transportmittel, Menschen aller Art wie Schler, Passanten, Arbeiter, alte Menschen, Winter und Sommerpanoramen, Manhattan bei Tag und bei Nacht. Es wird also ein recht umfassendes Bild von Manhattan entworfen. Man kann schon fast von Manhattan als 'Stadt in der Grostadt' sprechen. Zu den Bildern hrt man Allens Stimme, unterlegt von Gershwins 'Rhapsody in Blue', zu dem am Ende des Vorspanns 'rhythmisch parallel' ein Feuerwerk ber der nchtlichen New Yorker Skyline explodiert. Gershwin schafft mit seiner Musik, die ein Zusammenspiel von Alt und Modern ist, einen ganz neuen und aufregenden Stil. Auch Woody Allen verleiht 'Manhattan' visuell durch die schwarzweien Bilder einen altmodischen, verjhrten Charakter, whrend die Handlung und die menschlichen Probleme, die er beschreibt, zeitgem sind und in der Gegenwart stattfinden. Die Musik Gershwins ergnzt und unterstreicht also auf sehr einfhlsame Weise die Atmosphre in Woody Allens Film.
