Inwiefern handelt es sich trotz der Ablehnung der Bezeichnung als roman' um einen Roman? Welcher Handlungsstrang ist der vorherrschende, die Reisegeschichte von Herr und Diener, ihr Verhltnis zueinander oder doch eher Jacques unvollendete Liebesgeschichte, die eingelegten Geschichten oder die Thematisierung der Erzhltheorie? Auch die Funktion der eingeschobenen Geschichten ist umstritten ebenso wie die Problematik des Verhltnisses von Leser und Erzhler. Die grundlegende, Form und Inhalt bestimmende, Frage ist die nach dem Verhltnis von metafiktionalem Erzhlen und dem Konzept von Fatalismus und Determinismus in Jacques le Fataliste et son matre', womit diese Arbeit sich befassen will. Zunchst soll hierzu die Erzhltheorie unter besonderer Beachtung von Gattungszugehrigkeit und des LeserErzhlerVerhltnisses auf den ganzen Roman bezogen untersucht werden sowie das Erzhlverhalten in der Liebesgeschichte von Jacques. In Gegenberstellung von Freiheit und unterschiedlichen Determinismusmodellen wird Jacques Fatalismustheorie, das Prinzip von Zufall und Schicksal in der Reisegeschichte sowie unter Einbeziehung der Moralphilosophie der Determinismus in den eingeschobenen Geschichten nher betrachtet werden. Letztendlich gilt es dann die Verbindung zwischen metafiktionalem Erzhlen und Fatalismustheorie herzustellen, wobei der Aspekt der immanenten Erzhltheorie sowie das Problem von freiheitlichem Handeln unter determinierenden Umstnden (Charakter, Flle') im Vordergrund stehen sollen.
