About the Author Francisco Surez wird 1548 in Granada geboren und beginnt bereits als Dreizehnjhriger das Studium der Jurisprudenz in Salamanca. Drei Jahre spter tritt er den Dominikanern bei und beginnt Philosophie und Theologie zu studieren. Verschiedene Lehrttigkeiten fhren ihn ber Segovia und Valladolid an Collegium Romanum, doch wird er mehrfach wegen Abweichungen von der herrschenden Lehrmeinung zurechtgewiesen. Die Metaphysischen Disputationen erscheinen 1597 in zwei Bnden. Als Kommentar zur aristotelischen Metaphysik angelegt, bricht Surez mit dem Interpretationskanon und prgt durch seine Auslegungsweise sowohl formell als auch inhaltlich die Entstehung und Gestaltung der neuzeitlichen Metaphysik von Descartes ber Leibniz bis Kant. Als "doctor eximius" wird der bedeutendste Vertreter der spanischen Sptscholastik zwar mehrfach bei der Inquisition angezeigt, dann aber von Philipp II 1597 auf den Lehrstuhl fr Theologie in Coimbra berufen. Surez untersttzt 1613 die ppstliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem englischen Knig mit der Kampfschrift Defensio fidei catholicae. Der Scharfsinn seines philosophischen Denkens befrdert nicht nur an katholischen sondern auch an reformierten Universitten Europas die Verbreitung seines Werkes als letztes systematisches Kompendium der scholastischen Metaphysik. Surez stirbt 1617 in Lissabon.
