Die Artikel erscheinen unter ihrem deutschen Stichwort, knnen aber deutsch, englisch oder franzsisch abgefasst sein. Neben dem Text werden auch Abbildungen, Skizzen und Plne geboten. Die Enzyklopdie wendet sich auer an die engeren Fachkreise auch an Historiker, Rechtsgeschichtler, Religionswissenschaftler u. a. Das Reallexikon hat keinen Vorlufer, auf dem es aufbauen konnte; es hat sich international zu einem unentbehrlichen Hilfsmittel entwickelt. Geplant sind 16 Bnde.
