Im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung steht die Sonderbundszeit, die fr die Innerschweiz ab 1839 mit der Endphase der Regeneration beginnt und bis zum Sonderbundskrieg 1847 dauert. In diese historisch usserst bewegte Zeit fllt das politische Wirken Bernhard Meyers (18101874). Meyer, vom Liberalismus her kommend, versuchte in den politischen und religisen Auseinandersetzungen eine Position der Mitte zu gewinnen, schloss sich aber schliesslich dem konservativen Sonderbund an. Fr die bisherige Geschichtsschreibung, die hauptschlich die Optik der Sieger fokussierte, galt er deshalb als ultramontaner Sonderbndler. Eine solche politische Einordnung greift zu kurz und blendet wichtige Gesichtspunkte der Sonderbundszeit aus. Das Buch illustriert deswegen diese historische Zeitspanne aus der Perspektive des Verlierers Bernhard Meyers und bietet somit neue Zugnge und Anstze fr die Geschichtsforschung. Es soll aufzeigen, wieso Meyer, zwischen die Fronten geratend, die Position eines liberalen Katholiken verliess und wieso sein Ansatz eines Dritten Weges scheiterte.
