Es handelt sich bei seinen Bchern weder um Lyrik noch um reine Prosa philosophischer, theologischer oder mystischer Natur, noch um psychoanalytische Essays. Jabs' Schriften haben weder Anfang noch Abschlu, sie sind vielmehr als ein einziger, von allerlei Brchen gezeichneter Text zu lesen. Aus der Not seiner Unklassifizierbarkeit heraus und dem Bemhen, der Kohrenz aller JabsBcher Rechnung zu tragen, fand der Begriff "texteJabs" Verbreitung. Scheint dieser Jabstext im Vergleich zur neuzeitlichen Literatur seinesgleichen zu suchen, zeigt sich deutlich die Anlehnung an die Tradition jdischer Kommentarliteratur. Fr den aus gypten stammenden Jabs ist das Judentum ein strukturelles Vorbild. Die formalen Merkmale des jabesianischen Buches stimmen weitgehend mit denen des Talmud berein: Beide kennzeichnet zum Beispiel das Prinzip des Kreisens das heit, auf der Ebene des Textausschnitts: um ein bestimmtes Motiv kreisen Fragen, Dialoge, Kommentare; auf der Ebene des Gesamttextes: bestimmte Motive werden immer wieder aufgegriffen und variiert. Urjdisch sind auch das Prinzip des Fragens und die Tradition der Buchstabenneukombination. Doch charakterisiert sich der Jabstext auch durch seinen Posttheismus, durch die Infragestellung der Beziehung von Schrift, Autor, Leser und verstummtem Gott. Hier setzt diese Untersuchung an: Anhand Jabs' Reflexionen hierber soll jenes uralte Problem freigefrst werden: das Verhltnis vom Unsichtbaren und Virulenten zum Sichtbaren und Realisierten, hinfhrend zum Gegensatzpaar Freiheit und Vorbestimmtheit.
