Im Nordwesten des Alten Reiches im heutigen Belgien, im Rheinland und in Westfalen ubernahmen seit der ersten Halfte des 17. Jahrhunderts insbesondere Angehorige der Bettelorden Lehramter im offentlichen Schulwesen. Den Kernraum dieser Entwicklung bildet die alte Erzdiozese Koln. In einem zeitlichen Langsschnitt wird das Phanomen der Bettelordensschulen in die Entwicklung vom Hochmittelalter bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts eingeordnet. Ging man bisher von einer generellen Dominanz der Jesuiten auf dem Sektor des Schulwesens wahrend der Fruhen Neuzeit (16.18. Jahrhundert) aus, so ruckt die vorliegende Untersuchung dieses Vorurteil zurecht. 216 Niederlassungsorte der Orden bzw. Orte, an denen Mendikanten als Lehrer tatig waren, werden anhand eines Gliederungsschemas systematisch untersucht und in einem Katalog erfasst. Dieser Katalog bildet die Basis fur vergleichende, reprasentative und differenzierende Betrachtungen uber die Entstehungszusammenhange, den Schulalltag und die Schliessung der Lehranstalten.
