Sowohl zu Lebzeiten als auch in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten bis heute haben Gelehrte versucht, diese herausragende Persnlichkeit zu durchleuchten. Caesar, dieser geniale Feldherr, der im ersten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert das rmische Volk und dessen Staat lenkte und leitete, zieht Wissenschaftler und Laien gleichermaen in seinen Bann. Dabei stellt sich zu Beginn der Betrachtung die Frage, ob er nun von Anfang an Alleinherrscher sein wollte, oder einfach nur situationsbedingt entschieden hat. Hierzu haben sich in den vergangenen Jahren zwei wissenschaftliche Tendenzen manifestiert: Whrend vornehmlich ltere Wissenschaftler wie etwa Eduard Meyer, der festen berzeugung sind, der Plan Caesars sei es gewesen, schlussendlich die res publica durch eine Tyrannis zu ersetzen, scheint seit einigen Jahren die neure Forschung indes eine andere Auffassung zu vertreten: Caesar habe sich mit der von ihm errichteten dictatura perpetua zufrieden gegeben, nicht zuletzt weil er damit die Befugnisse einer defactoMonarchie" innehatte, ohne sich der anrchigen dominatio verdchtig zu machen. Da diese kurze Exkursion in die CaesarForschung nicht ausreicht, die Frage nach der politischen Motivation Cesars zu erklren und dies auch gar nicht soll, versucht die Arbeit anhand von historischen Quellen wie Plutarch, Sueton, Cicero, Appian und Ceasar selbst sowie den Caesarbiographien von Matthias Gelzer, Martin Jehne und Kurt Raaflaub, einen Einblick in die immer noch bestehende Diskussion um Caesars Motivation zu geben. Im Weiteren sttzt sich diese Arbeit auf die Verffentlichungen von Hermann Strasburger, Hinnerk Bruhn, Luciano Canfora sowie Astr
