This collection of essays derives from the 1975 meeting of Women and Religion Section of the American Academy of Religion. It reflects the increasing clarity and sophistication of the pioneering group of women scholars in religion who began to organize themselves less than a decade ago around the issue of women in religious studies. Not merely a pressure group advocating the equality of women in the academic study of religion, the AAR women's caucus saw as a major concern the exploration of both methodological and substantive issues surrounding the study of women and religion. The goals of the group included both critique of the treatment (or lack of treatment) of women in religious scholarship and constructive attempts to right the imbalanced understanding of women in the various fields of religious studies. Tat the work of this broad task is well under way is demonstrated by the present volume. With few exceptions, the essays are cogent, persuasively argued and interesting.
