Einleitend werde ich im Allgemeinen die Charakteristika afrikanischer Musik errtern, um die wesentlichen Unterschiede und die Andersartigkeit der afrikanischen Musikauffassung im Gegensatz zur abendlndischen Musikvorstellung aufzuzeigen. Im weiteren Verlauf beschftige ich mich mit dem Begriff der Tonsprache und Tonschrift. So verfolge ich die Fragestellung, warum die Kolonialmchte die afrikanischen Vlker als schriftlose kategorisierten und schlielich durch falsche evolutionistische Gedankengnge als primitive Zwischenstufe von Mensch und Tier bedachten. Dabei lege ich eingangs eine historische bersicht und einen Vergleich der abendlndischen und afrikanischen Sprachkultur dar, um zu belegen, warum Tonsprachen entstanden sind und dass diese durchaus als Schrift im abendlndischen Sinne verstanden werden knnen. Im Folgenden behandle ich konkret das Verhltnis zwischen den Tonsprachen und der Musik, wobei ich auf die Funktion des Tons im Verhltnis zum Wort und auf die Bestimmung der Melodierichtung durch eine Tonsprache in der Vokalmusik eingehen werde. Darberhinaus erlutere ich den Werdegang einer Tonsprache bis hin zur Trommelsprache. Dabei behandele ich das Sprechtrommeln und folglich das Verhltnis von Tonsprache und Rhythmus. Innerhalb der Hausarbeit finden sich verschiedene Abbildungen, wobei ich grere Exemplare im Anhang untergebracht habe, um den Textfluss nicht zu stren. Man kann schwerlich pauschalisierend von einer einheitlichen afrikanischen Musik' sprechen, denn es gibt keine reine afrikanische Musik, sondern nur viele verschiedene afrikanische Musikarten, so wie es viele verschiedene afrikanis
