Zudem lebten sie in einem Land, welches durch seine unwirtlichen Klimaverhltnisse und Vegetation unbewohnbar schien. Die Dokumentation der Ereignisse whrend des Prinzipats unter Augustus, gerade ber die in Germanien gefhrten Kriege, ist nur sehr fragmentarisch berliefert, weshalb es sich empfiehlt, mglichst viele Quellen zu Rate zu ziehen, denn sie ergnzen sich grtenteils und man gewinnt somit einen guten Gesamteindruck. Ich informierte mich in den Quellen von Sueton, Cassius Dio, Caesar, Velleius Paterculus, Florus, Tacitus und Augustus selbst. Augustus in seiner auergewhnlichen politischen Stellung als Prinzeps gewann viele neue Gebiete als Provinzen zum rmischen Imperium dazu, somit entsprach es auch seinen Vorstellungen, das freie Germanien endlich zu einer Provinz zu machen, um keine Angriffe aus dem Norden mehr frchten zu mssen. Jedoch stellte sich die Realisierung der Plne als schwieriger heraus als zunchst angenommen, und die Germanen erwiesen sich als hartnckige und zhe Feinde, welche lnger als alle anderen Vlker einer Unterwerfung der Rmer standhielten. Auf die Erluterung der Innenpolitik mchte ich daher in dem begrenzten Rahmen dieser Arbeit verzichten. Im Folgenden mchte ich mit der Ausgangssituation in Germanien beginnen, d.h. mit den Angriffen der Kimbern und Teutonen, Caesars Kriegsfhrung in Gallien und einer allgemeinen Beschreibung der Germanen.
