Idioma: Hebreo A da de hoy, la Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) es la nica edicin crtica completa de la Biblia hebrea, con todas las variantes importantes de texto y las correcciones sugeridas presentadas en notas a pie de pgina. Es la sucesora de la Biblia Hebraica editada por Rudolf Kittel. A diferencia de las ediciones crticas del Nuevo Testamento griego, la BHS no tiene como finalidad reconstruir el texto original de la Biblia hebrea. Esto no sera posible basndose en los manuscritos disponibles: los testimonios textuales directos de mayor antigedad son los manuscritos descubiertos a partir de 1949 en el desierto de Judea en las cuevas de Qumrn en el mar Muerto. A excepcin de una sola transcripcin del Libro de Isaas que se conserva ntegramente, los textos bblicos de Qumrn consisten exclusivamente en fragmentos en los que en la mayora de los casos solo se pueden identificar unas pocas palabras seguidas, y a menudo meramente letras sueltas. Hoy por hoy solo se encuentran disponibles testimonios textuales en cantidades significativas de alrededor del siglo III a.C: La primera traduccin de la Biblia hebrea al griego, la llamada Septuaginta, se remonta a esta poca. Posteriormente otras traducciones antiguas surgieron como testimonios indirectos adicionales, en particular la Vulgata en latn, la Peshitta en siraco y el Trgum en arameo. La transcripcin completa de mayor antigedad de la Biblia hebrea que conocemos hoy en da es el Codex Leningradensis, que data del ao 1008; de casi unos cien aos de anterioridad, pero desafortunadamente ya no completo, es el Cdex Aleppo del ao 930. Los cdices de Leningrado y Alepo representan dos casos destacados y ejemplares del llamado texto masortico, la versin que fue proclamada como definitiva por escribas judos alrededor de 100 d.C. Habida cuenta de la naturaleza incompleta de los testimonios textuales anteriores al texto masortico, no es posible realizar una reconstruccin del texto original de la Biblia hebrea. Para poder presentar un texto uniforme en una edicin impresa, es por lo tanto oportuno presentar el texto masortico, con las variantes respectivas dentro de un aparato crtico, y en combinacin con propuestas de correcciones del texto masortico cuando proceda. La BHS, que refleja los hallazgos de ms de cien aos de investigaciones textuales del Antiguo Testamento, se estructura segn este principio. Hoy la BHS se utiliza en todo el mundo y se considera entre todas las denominaciones como una edicin altamente fiable de la Biblia hebrea. Proporciona la base tanto para la formacin acadmica como para todas las traducciones bblicas fidedignas. Desde 2004, se ha visto sustituida sucesivamente por la Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BHQ), que inicialmente se est publicando en fascculos individuales.
