Los compuestos naturales bioactivos de origen marino se conocen poco. Se estima que existen por lo menos 750,000 especies biolgicas en los mares y ocanos y se han descrito slo alrededor de 300,000. Sin embargo, stas representan un amplio reservorio de molculas interesantes y potencialmente tiles en diversas aplicaciones. Las plantas y los animales marinos han sido forzados por el ambiente a enfrentar condiciones difciles como la alta concentracin de sales, extremas temperaturas, alta presin, variaciones en la disponibilidad de oxgeno, de alimento, etc. Para sobrevivir, han desarrollado procesos bioqumicos que les hace poseer rutas metablicas nicas, que en algunos casos, no se encuentran en los organismos terrestres. Como resultado, las especies marinas poseen protenas con actividad cataltica especial (biocatalizadores) que puede ser aprovechada por el hombre en el desarrollo de aplicaciones para la medicina, la bioingeniera o la biotecnologa. En la presente obra se describe la investigacin realizada para caracterizar la actividad de algunos de ellos.
