El biodiesel es un biocombustible producido convencionalmente a partir de aceites comestibles, tales como el aceite de raps, maravilla o soya. Sin embargo, el uso de aceites comestibles en su elaboracin, ha generado un combustible de alto costo que no ha podido competir con los combustibles fsiles tradicionales. Para disminuir los costos del biodiesel, las investigaciones a nivel mundial se han focalizado en el reemplazo de los aceites comestibles por materias primas alternativas, tales como el aceite de microalgas y el aceite residual de fritura. Pese a las ventajas del uso de materias primas alternativas, stas presentan frecuentemente propiedades distintas al aceite comestible, que no permiten su utilizacin en la produccin de biodiesel utilizando catlisis bsica (proceso convencional). A diferencia del proceso convencional, la utilizacin de procesos biotecnolgicos permite la produccin de biodiesel a partir de materias primas alternativas. En el libro se da a conocer el desarrollo de una investigacin para la optimizacin de un proceso enzimtico para la produccin de biodiesel, utilizando aceites residuales de fritura.
