La regin costera del Estado de Yucatn es conocida por su gran riqueza biolgica, ejemplo de ello es el nmero y tamao de las reas naturales protegidas (ANPs) declaradas en el Estado. Sin embargo, estudios que ayuden a conocer la biodiversidad de las comunidades de la macrofauna marina son escasos. A partir del 9 de marzo del 2010, se decret la Reserva Estatal de Cinagas y Manglares de la Costa Norte de Yucatn que incluye zonas aledaas a la Microcuenca de Chabihau, la cual tambin se considera una zona clave, ya que est dentro del Corredor Biolgico Costa Norte de Yucatn. Sin embargo a pesar de dicha importancia, actualmente la zona costera de Yucatn se encuentra bajo presin por la probable explotacin del petrleo en la plataforma marina, motivo suficiente para realizar estudios como el presente que permitan aumentar el conocimiento de los recursos biolgicos as como integrar nueva informacin que adems busque aportar propuestas para la solucin a problemas sociales y as lograr un manejo holstico de las ANPs en la costa del Estado de Yucatn.
