Two American athletes made history at the 1968 Summer Olympics, but not on the track. They staged a silent protest against racial injustice. Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gold and bronze medalists in the 200meter sprint, stood with heads bowed and blackgloved fists raised as the national anthem played during the medal ceremony. The Australian silver medalist wore a human rights badge in support. All three would pay a heavy price for their activism. A Life magazine photograph seen by millions would ensure that the silent protest was remembered, and eventually admired, as a symbol of the battle for equality and civil rights.

The content is certainly fascinating, especially how it connects sports and society, but I found some parts a bit slow. Still, if you're into history and politics, it’s worth a read. Just don’t expect a fast-paced narrative.

Not what I expected
I thought it would focus more on the sports aspect, but it leans heavily into the political side. It's well-written, but if you're looking for a light read, this isn't it. Just be aware of what you're getting into.

An impactful narrative
I really enjoyed how this book delves into the socio-political implications of that famous photograph. It’s beautifully printed, and the writing flows well. Definitely a great addition to my collection of sports history.

Came with a dented cover
I was excited to receive this book, but it arrived with a little dent on the cover. The inside is fine and the writing is top-notch, but I wish the packaging had been better.

A captivating piece of history
I bought this book as a gift for my brother, and he can't put it down! The way it details the photograph and its impact on the political protest is incredible. The black and white imagery really brings everything to life, making it a powerful read.
