Die Boden des tropischen Afrika werden hauptsachlich von klein bauerlichen Familien genutzt. Die dortigen Bauernbetriebe verfiige gemessen an dem Stand des landbautechnisch Moglichen und wirtschaft lich Sinnvollen uber erhebliche Leistungsreserven, die durch die Ein fiihrung von Verbesserungen und Neuerungen und den in Wechselwirkung dazu stehenden sozialen und kulturellen Wandel vergleichsweise rasch und billig erschlossen werden konnen. Ein Beispiel hierfur ist die Landwirtschaft der Wasukuma in Tansania, die in der vorliegenden Untersuchung behandelt wird. Die Einfuhrung und Ausbreitung des Baumwollanbaues brachte eine schrittweise Kommer 'lialisierung der bauerlichen Produktion und zugleich den Obergang vom Wanderfeldbau zu weitgehend stationaren Formen der Bodennutzung. Der Baumwollanbau fiihrte einerseits zu einer erheblichen Steigerung der landlichen Einkommen, zur Ausweitung des Exportvolumens und somit zur Belebung der Gesamtwirtschaft. Andererseits wachst die Zahl der Hindernisse, die einer anhaltenden landwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung ent gegenstehen. Dabei ist vor allem auf die Probleme der Bodenfruchtbar keit, der Viehhaltung und der Oberwindung arbeitswirtschaftlicher Eng passe zu verweisen. Die durchgefuhrte Untersuchung ist in vieler Hinsicht von allgemeiner Bedeutung, denn ein groBer Teil der bauerlichen Betriebe in Afrika sud lich der Sahara produziert bereits fur den Verkauf im Rahmen einer halb kommerziellen Wirtschaftsweise. Die Fragen, die dabei auftreten, sind weithin dieselben wie die im Sukumaland.
