The interaction between text and image, and the reception of images by the reading public are explored here in the context of books produced during the Industrial Revolution. The authors first presented their material as part of a lecture series at Skidmore College, where four of the contributors are employed. The essays discuss the use of illustration in works of Shakespeare, Taglioni, Cruikshank, Rossetti, Beardsley, and Virginia Woolf.
