Unlike any other photographer, Boris Carmi (19142002) succeeded in capturing the essence of Israeli society from its very beginning in images that never fail to surprise. He was one of the founding fathers of photojournalism in a newborn country, focussing on scenes of everyday life, and portraits of the country's cultural elite. In the midst of conflict, however, it was the ordinary people who interested Carmi most.
